#92 - Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (Lucas, 1999)

Odd little film.  First time I’ve watched this film since probably it’s debut on Fox back in, say, 2001? 2002? Yes, it’s a poor film, but it’s not without its merits.  Maul is a fantastically menacing character, and Park’s choreography is great.  Neeson is fine here, and while the midochlorian mentions do hinder the film, it’s Neeson’s explanation that kills it.  The idea of people being able to identify a Jedi by blood sample, as if it were a disease, is intriguing enough, but the landing that is stuck is so crazy stupid and so crazy silly that it’s laughable.  Overall, it’s very much a film geared for kids, made by a man who has no idea how smart kids actually are.  Really odd little film. Will look wonderful in 3D though.
